History: These are links to official references regarding Ginko's history: http://mushishi.wikia.com/wiki/Ginko | http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mushishi
Ginko's official canon history begins at 11 years old. He does not remember anything before that, not even his given name. His earliest 'accepted' memory is when he finds himself walking alone and lost in the mountainous regions of Japan. He does not know of any family he might have. All he knows and tells people is his name - Ginko - which people find strange yet logical since he does have silver hair.
Ginko was found by a villager living in the mountainside and took him in as a helper for a few days. The villager wanted to take him and introduce him to the village elder - but the night before the meeting - Ginko noticed a big bundle of Mushi gathered outside the villager's house. Instinct told him that he had to leave as it's not safe for humans to be exposed to such a large number of Mushi. The villager never saw him again.
Because of his appearance, people noticed Ginko immediately and talk began to circulate from village to village. Then the Watari got hold of this information and took Ginko in. The Watari are nomad people who follow the life force of Mushi called Kouki. They make a living out of selling information to Mushi-shi. Ginko lived with the Watari for a while - up until Ginko was old enough to stand apprenticeship with different Mushi-shi. Canon does not say how many Mushi-shi Ginko lived with, exactly. In the manga, there were two documented Mushi-shi but there seriously could have been more. It is safe to assume that Ginko had to be passed from one teacher to another because of his condition (attracting Mushi) and he probably lived this way until he was old and knowledgeable enough to be called a Mushi-shi. While most Mushi-shi prefer to kill or eradicate Mushi, Ginko trusts his methods enough that he does not feel the need to kill them.
In the anime and manga - the first time viewers/readers see Ginko he is already in his late twenties and pretty much confident in his abilities in treating, documenting and relocating Mushi.
Age: About 28 to 29 years old
Canon Point: Volume 6 of the Mushi-shi manga, the chapter about the Hadumagri, which is a Mushi that can recreate the surroundings to a false Spring during the winter season. This Mushi then attracts different animals and then feeds off their life source. When lured into the Hadumagri territory its victims usually fall asleep as if hibernating and then they wake up when the real Spring arrives. Ginko falls victim to the Hadumagri in this volume - he falls asleep for weeks - but instead of waking up in Hokkaido, he wakes up in Vegas. At this point in the series, Ginko is dealing with feelings of loneliness and is tempted to settle down in the snowy regions of Japan though he knows that it's not a good thing to do as he tends to attract Mushi.
Personality:
Ginko is first and foremost a wanderer - his thoughts are filled with traveling and the need to learn all there is to learn about Mushi. He has no definite destination and usually decides where he is to go based on the information given to him by other Mushi-shi. This means that Ginko makes no long-term plans. He also wanders out of necessity, there is something about his physiology that attracts Mushi and it is popular belief that when a lot of Mushi gather in one place bad things will happen. It is because of this unique trait that Ginko feels the need to detach himself from the people and places he visits - his default is to always treat every experience with a "live and let live" attitude because all of it is temporary whether he likes it or not. This can be seen in Volume 6 of the manga in the Hadumagri chapter where his client and the client's sister clearly wants him to stay and yet he refuses them because of his condition. He does this with a heavy heart, of course.
Ginko is also a professional - treating all his visits to 'Mushi infested places' as a form of consultation. He also thinks of the people he's helped as his clients, wanting to help them as best he can with his knowledge about different Mushi species. Ginko's purpose is also unclouded as he knows his purpose in helping people is also beneficial to the Mushi opting to remove the Mushi from populated places rather than exterminating them. Ginko believes that people and Mushi can co-exist and that Mushi are not evil though sometimes they cause humans discomfort. This belief carries over to his view of the world in general - though some people and things are different, they are not necessarily bad. With that said, it is safe to say that Ginko is not a judgmental person and is pretty laid back with how he deals with those who are a little bit different from the rest.
Ginko is inquisitive in the sense that he is always on the lookout for news about Mushi and new discoveries about the species. But it does not stop there, he is always interested in a good story and will always take the time to listen. This is seen in episode 7 of the anime where Ginko helps a young man find a Mushi called Koda. He stays with the young man for months in order to find this creature - he was originally reeled in by a good story told by the young man. It's also safe to say that because of his lifestyle and the necessity to keep traveling, Ginko has the liberty to be impulsive and a tendency to be a free spirit, being able to decide on a whim - where he wants to go and with whom.
A cunning side also exists in Ginko, maybe it's because he travels a lot that he's become more practical than sentimental. He will not think twice about selling something for a profit. And his merchandise is not always authentic as seen in an episode in the anime where he has an artist draw an image on a coat that's similar to a Mushi-inhabited apparel. Ginko then sells this fake coat to Adashino-sensei (his friend). Though this sounds a bit cruel, Ginko is also a good friend when he needs to be - as seen in the case of the Kunohami where he immediately agrees to help Adashino solve the case and even gives him a comforting pat on the shoulder, something Ginko has not done for anyone else. Also, even if Ginko travels a lot, he's maintained longterm friendships with Adashino, Tanyu (a Mushi historian of sorts) and Isaza (a member of the Watari-clan who work closely with Mushi-shi), though (as stated earlier) not sentimental he knows and understands the value of human relationships. He knows how to nurture human relationships though not in a mushy and patronizing way - this is seen when he comforts Tanyu by saying he is willing to travel with her and go off on an adventure. Tanyu appreciates this as she knows that Ginko's serious not minding Tanyu's disability.
Though his physical appearance is strange - silver hair, one green eye, tall and dressed in Western clothes (despite the era he lives in) - Ginko makes it a point to be neat and clean even while on the road. He is a very laid back character and it will take a lot to anger or scare him - this is mainly because he would rather know why something is feared, than be be scared of that thing immediately. He also does not deny that he looks strange and even stares at the void, which is supposed to be his left eye, this acceptance makes him a fair judge of character as he is not swayed by physical appearance alone. Ginko does not question why he looks that way but simply accepts the fact as it is. This proves that he isn't also in pursuit of the past that he cannot remember and lives in the present willingly.
Though Ginko does not remember his encounter with Nui she still serves as the greatest influence in his life, as her philosophy dictates the direction of Ginko's research and treatment of cases. It is in a way a tragic relationship that goes beyond time or memory because even if Ginko is alone in his travels, he isn't really alone because part of the Tokoyami (the black void in his left eye) travels with him and that black void is where Nui has disappeared to. It is safe to say that there's always going to be part of Ginko that will be subconsciously searching for that lost part of his life.
As part of head-canon - I think that whenever Ginko smokes his special cigarettes (his anti-Mushi defense) - he'll always feel wistful and nostalgic though he cannot figure out why. He will most likely appreciate being in Vegas despite the conditions. He'll definitely try and learn as much as he can from the place and savor the experience of being able to stay in one place for a long period of time. He will also probably assume (in the beginning, before he reads his care package) that Loki is a Mushi.
Powers/Abilities: He has no special powers - but through years of exposure and research, Ginko knows how to cure ailments caused by Mushi. He also knows how to make nature work for him - using special sake or kouki as catalysts. For example, he can scan activities on a whole mountain by going Mugara surfing - he calls on this Mushi up by "offering" or tossing cups of sake on the ground. This in turn "wakes up" the Mugara. When the Mugara is awake it coils all over the Mushi-shi that tossed the sake on the ground. By having the Mugara coil around him, Ginko is able to create a sub-terranean network that goes as far as the roots of this Mushi reaches. Whatever it is that the roots touch or the leaves "see", Ginko is also able to see. Ginko's seen using this technique in Chapter 6 of the manga, when he searches for Mujika (another Mushi-shi that's gone missing).
